Potosí Correctional Center is an unincorporated prison situated in Missouri’s county of Washington, close to Potosi. At present, it is a maximum security facility where about 1000 extremely dangerous male inmates that are awaiting capital punishment.
It was inaugurated in the late 1980’s with 200 inmates. Most of them were serving life imprisonment without parole and only a few of them were serving shorter sentences. The first death row prisoners lived in a two wing facility at Potosi Correctional Center and had special custody levels as well as administrative segregation so that those awaiting capital punishment that showed good behavior could certain benefits.
At this prison facility almost all Missouri executions took place between 1989 and 2005, when the chamber of Execution was moved to the Easter Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center.
