High Desert State Prison is located in Clark County, Nevada, close to Indian Springs. It is the newest penitentiary facility in Nevada, inaugurated in early September of 2000. It is also the largest facility of the Nevada Department of Corrections.
High Desert State Prison is a 1,600,000 sq ft complex about 30 miles away from Las Vegas, and was designed as the most secure prison in Nevada. There are eight housing units which can each contain over 300 inmates. Each unit is divided into four sections and each pair of sections share a control center and a staff office. There are also two activity rooms in each housing unit and a large infirmary. The perimeter of High Desert State Prison is kept secure by a lethal electrified fence and seven armed towers. The Clark County School District offers an education program to the inmates.
